PE Curriculum
Intent
At Dunn Street Primary School, we want every child to enjoy being active and to understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. With higher levels of childhood obesity in our local area, it is vital that our pupils learn how regular exercise, good nutrition and positive habits can help them stay healthy and happy.
Our PE curriculum introduces children to a wide range of sports and activities—including cricket and rugby, which play an important role in developing teamwork, confidence and key physical skills. We aim to help every child become physically confident, enjoy being active, and develop the motivation to take part in sport throughout their lives.
Implementation
We deliver PE through a well-planned and progressive curriculum that builds skills year by year. Children take part in two hours of high-quality PE each week, supported by skilled teachers and specialist coaches.
-
Cricket and rugby are taught across the school, with coaching support and opportunities to take part in festivals and competitions.
-
Daily activity is promoted through active playgrounds, lunchtime clubs and active learning within lessons.
-
Healthy lifestyle messages are woven throughout PE and the wider curriculum, helping children understand fitness, nutrition and emotional well-being.
-
Staff training ensures PE lessons are safe, inclusive and engaging for all pupils.
-
We work with local sports clubs to broaden sporting experiences and encourage children to stay active outside of school hours.
Impact
Our approach to PE helps children become more confident, skilled and enthusiastic about physical activity. Pupils develop strong fundamental movement skills, build resilience and teamwork, and enjoy trying new sports—especially cricket and rugby.
We are seeing growing participation in physical activity, improved fitness levels and a stronger understanding of what it means to live a healthy life. Children leave Dunn Street Primary School with the knowledge and confidence they need to stay active, make healthy choices, and continue enjoying sport in the future.
